Video: Hezbollah fighters raise flag on Qusayr mosque

An amateur video posted online by activists showed fighters from the Lebanese Shiite group, Hezbollah, raising a flag with “Ya Hussein” or “Oh hail Hussein” inscribed on it, in a new sign of escalating sectarianism in Syria’s civil war, reported Al Arabiya news channel.

Shiites highly revere Hussein, who is Prophet Mohammed’s grandson. Hussein and his father Ali, who is also the prophet’s cousin, were seen by Shiites as the right successors in the Caliphate after the prophet’s death.

Syria is ruled by minority Allawites, an offshoot of Shiite Islam. President Bashar al-Assad’s regime claims the rebels, most of whom are Sunnis, fighting against his government are radical Islamists and are terrorists.

The video appeared as the Syrian regime claimed victory with the backing of Hezbollah fighters on the final opposition stronghold in the area surrounding Syria’s central town of Qusayr, the village of Buwayda.

“Our heroic troops have restored safety and security in Eastern Buwayda,” AFP news agency reported Syrian state television as saying on Saturday.

Hundreds of people who fled Qusayr during battles between opposition and regime fighters had taken refuge in Buwayda when the town was captured by Syrian forces earlier this week, according to AFP.
