Video: Egypt holds funeral for slain police general

Thousands of Egyptians marched on Friday in the funeral process of a police general who was killed a day before in a raid on an Islamist stronghold near Cairo.

Friday’s ceremony was led by army chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi in full military honors, highlighting the authorities’ resolve to move against strongholds of armed supporters of Islamist President Mohammad Mursi.

Top officials in the country’s interim government also attended the funeral.

Gen. Nabil Farrag was killed in fighting Thursday between security forces and Islamists in the town of Kerdasa.

The interior ministry said 68 wanted men were arrested in the security operation launched after dawn on Thursday.

Militants took control of Kerdasa in mid-August, killing 15 policemen in revenge for the authorities’ crackdown on a pro-Mursi protest that killed hundreds in Cairo.

Egyptian media on Friday poured praise on the Kerdasah operation.

“Kerdasah liberated of terrorism,” said a front-page headline in state newspaper al-Gomhuriya, while independent daily al-Shoruk said: “The state is back, terrorism fades.”

However Brotherhood newspaper al-Hurriya Wal Adala blasted security operations in Kerdasah and Delga earlier in the week as “a war on Egyptians.”

Security forces on Monday raided the central town of Delga in Minya province, which was held by hardline Islamists for more than a month.
