UK FM Hague calls for ‘strong’ U.N. resolution on Syria

UK Foreign Secretary William Hague called on Wednesday for a strong U.N. resolution on Syria that can force President Bashar al-Assad to implement an agreement to hand over his chemical weapons.

In our view it needs to be as strong a resolution as possible, so that it is something that really binds the Assad regime into implementing this agreement,” Hague told Al Arabiyas New York bureau chief Talal al-Hajj in a special interview.

The most important aspect of the resolution is that it guarantees chemical weapons are reliably dealt with,” Hague said when asked if Chapter VI of the U.N. Security Council will apply to the anticipated resolution on Syria.

Hague did not give a final answer and said negotiations were ongoing.

“.. clearly there is a disagreement among the security council members… to most of the world it is very clear particularly after the inspectors report who used chemical weapons on the 21st of Aug., Russia continues to have a different view about that..Hague said.

The resolutions we put forward two years ago were all vetoed by Russia and China. We certainly believe there should be accountability for the use of chemical weapons and for the scale of murder and torture that has taken place in Syria,” he added.
