A video posted on the internet this week showed a domestic worker beating an elderly Emirati man in the emirate of Fujairah, UAE.
The footage, from a hidden camera placed inside the elderly man’s bedroom, shows the domestic worker beating the frail elderly man with a cane and in one instance, slapping him on the face.
The young worker was attacking the man who sat on the edge of a bed.
Further information obtained by Al Arabiya News Channel reveals that the mistreatment happened over a long period of time.
“Deira prosecution started the investigation after we received the complaint from police," said Yousif Hassan al-Mutawa, the deputy attorney general at Dubai Public Prosecution, according to the Abu Dhabi-based The National.
"We showed him the video that circulated on YouTube and questioned him. We have also asked the victim to come in for questioning so we can hear his side of the story," al-Mutawa added.
During custody the worker reportedly started beating himself and denying his actions, before he finally confessed to the assault, the victim’s daughter said, according to al-Roeya newspaper.
Believed to have arrived to the UAE only four months ago, the worker said the elderly Emirati had been highly demanding and as such, was preventing him [the worker] from sleep, after his confession.
The victim said that he wanted the worker “imprisoned and deported,” when asked about how he wanted his punishment to be.
According to UAE law, the worker faces imprisonment for up to three years, as well as a fine, before deportation.
“Law in the UAE is above everybody and all are equal according to UAE constitution. This means the foreigner has all his rights and our law protects him from his attacker,” said the deputy attorney general.
In a statement issued by the minister of social affairs on Wednesday, Mariam al-Roumi condemned the incident, saying that mistreating the elderly goes against traditional Arab values and Sharia, the Gulf News reported.
“I call on all families who have an elderly family member to make sure they provide them with all forms of care, and to make sure that they occupy the status that they deserve within the family,” said Mariam.
The victim’s family said they will no longer be hiring domestic workers after the incident, and warned against blindly trusting them.
The elderly man has three daughters, who are all married with children.
His daughters hired the worker to take care of their father while not at home, al-Roeya news website reported.SHOW MORE
