Iran has summoned Saudi Arabia’s charge d’affaires in Tehran after the lead Saudi-led coalition spokesman said the Islamic Republic had been training Yemen’s Houthi militias, IRNA news agency reported on Thursday.

The agency report quoted the Foreign Ministry as saying the envoy was summoned over the “baseless accusations” by Brigadier-General Ahmed Asiri at a briefing on Wednesday night.

The Saudi-led coalition spokesman said earlier this week that Iran and Lebanese militant group Hezbollah have trained Houthi militias to “harm Yemenis.”

Since late last month, Saudi Arabia has led a coalition of regional allies launching air strikes in Yemen, in an attempt to dislodge Houthi militias who control the capital Sanaa and are pressing in on the southern port city of Aden, the last stronghold of the internationally recognized government.
