Libyan army: Militant leader Wissam Bin Hamid killed

The spokesman for the Libyan army, Ahmed al-Mismari, has announced the death of Wissam Bin Hamid, leader of the Shura Council of Benghazi Revolutionaries.

According to Mismari, a militant named Naizar Atwier said in an interrogation that Bin Hamid was killed 28 days ago in an airstrike.

Bin Hamid was regarded as one of the most prominent Islamist leaders of what is known as the Shura Council of Benghazi Revolutionaries.

He emerged in 2011 as one of the rebels who revolted against Muammar Qaddafi and became the leader of a battalion affiliated to the Muslim Brotherhood in Libya. He rallied around him militants who had returned from Afghanistan.

Last month, local media circulated a video showing Bin Hamid standing in front of a tank with an ISIS flag on it.
