Former Lebanese culture minister Ghassan Salame replaced UN Secretary General’s special envoy for Libya Martin Kobler.

Salame is expected to officially take up the post at the end of this month at the expiry of Kobler’s term which lasted for two years.

Salameh will become the second Arab and Lebanese diplomat to take over this post after Tareq Metry.

Salama said in an interview with Asharq al-Awsat: “I have accepted the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres nomination; he will present my name for this mission, and now we just wait and see."

"The rules of engagement in the United Nations dictate that I wait for the actual day of my appointment before expressing my opinion," Salame added.
