Qatar Airways announced that it will start a new airline in India, the company’s CEO, Akbar al-Baker told reporters.

Earlier speculations have tied Qatar Airways to a possible investment in India’s biggest domestic airline, IndiGo.

Al-Bakr said that the new airline would partner with the governmental Qatar Investment Authority, adding that an application will be made to the Indian government for approval.

Earlier reports revealed that Qatar Airways signed an agreement to purchase 60 Boeing 737 Max aircraft in October, intended to supply the new airline in India.

While IndiGo refused to comment on Al-Bakr’s statements, an Indian civil aviation ministry official said that “there were informal discussions with Qatar Airways, but nothing has been finalized.”
