The United Arab Emirates will soon award contracts for the second phase of a rail network aimed at connecting the country’s industrial cities and enhancing commerce throughout the Gulf region, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday.

The $5.4 billion project will include constructing a track that will run from the UAE to the Saudi border, said Nasser Saif al-Mansoori, chief executive of Etihad Rail.

“This project is critical for the UAE... being the logistic hub of the whole region,” he added.

“The capacity of the ports is growing, and you need another method of safe and environmentally-friendly transportation. You also need to relieve pressure on the highways to reduce accidents and reduce the cost of road maintenance.”

The entire project is due for completion in 2018.
