Qatar Airways’ Chief Executive Officer Akbar al-Baker ridiculed his American competitors, saying there is no need to fly on “crap” carriers anymore where “you know you will always be served by grandmothers”.

According to The Economist, al-Baker added to his offensive remarks, “the average age of my cabin crew is only 26 years”.

Akbar al-Baker, speech in Dublin drew giggles from attendants as he was caught on camera in a video shared on YouTube.

The article published July 10 noted that the “grandmother,” “crap” comments suggest that “cabin crew is to be gawped at” and that “if a stewardess has lost her looks, she should be discarded and replaced by a younger model, regardless of how good she is at her job.”

Although Qatar Airways employs young men and women, female flight attendants have to sign contracts prohibiting them from getting pregnant or even get married.

Moreover, women on Qatar Airways’s staff are not permitted to be dropped off at work by unrelated men, the article added.

According to The Economist, Mr. al-Baker also critiqued The International Labor Organization (ILO) concerns about the airline’s treatment of women: “I don't give a damn about the ILO … I am there to run a successful airline.”

The article described Qatar Airways’ record of discrimination attributing ageism to success and the blatant sexist remarks of al-Baker as “misguided.”
