Dubai airport receives one-billionth traveler

Ruler of Dubai and Vice President of the UAE announced that one billion passengers have now travelled through Dubai International Airport.

"Today, Dubai International Airport received its number one billion traveler," Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid wrote on Twitter.

He added "When Dubai is an airport for a billion people, we know we have reached a new station, we started a different journey. And we took off towards a more beautiful future. Billion people have taken Dubai as their destination. Billion people we were part of their story...We are an airport, a destination and a heart for the world."

Dubai International Airport, which is home to Emirates Airlines and low-cost carrier Fly Dubai, was expecting double-digit passenger growth to resume as early as 2019.

Dubai became the world’s busiest for international travelers in 2014, overtaking London’s Heathrow, and it believes it can overtake Beijing and Atlanta to become the world’s busiest overall in the next two to three years.

Beijing Capital International handled 95.8 million passengers in 2017, while Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International handled 103.9 million.

Dubai is also developing a second airport about 60km (38 miles) to the south. That airport, Al Maktoum International, will see a roughly fivefold increase in annual capacity this year to 26 million passengers.
