Video: Spanish taxi driver receives standing ovation, tests negative for coronavirus

A taxi driver in Spain who has been transporting coronavirus patients for free was surprised with a standing ovation, a check and his own negative COVID-19 test at a hospital in Madrid, according to a video shared by the country's taxi union.

The heartwarming video originally shared by El Taxi Unido on April 18 has so far garnered more than 12.4 million views on Twitter.

The taxi union said hospital staff surprised the taxi driver by luring him to the location under the guise that he was picking up a patient. They said that they wanted to surprise him with a check and his own COVID-19 test, which proved negative, as a show of gratitude for his efforts as a taxi driver.

The video shows the male taxi driver in complete surprise and overcome by emotion as he is received in the hospital’s lobby with a standing ovation.

A doctor can then be seen handing an envelope with money and then a second document which said he tested negative for COVID-19 to much laughter from the gathered staff.

“It is very exciting to see solidarity between two sectors … When I see these things, I think that the #COVID-19 is bringing out the best in society. I hope that we learn from this misfortune and become better people in the future,” wrote Twitter user David Mad.
