Swami added that the initiative was an inspirational way “to get humanity at large united in the face of the COVID-19 onslaught,” state news agency WAM reported.

The Higher Committee of Human Fraternity, a group of interfaith religious leaders, scholars and cultural leaders, had announced that they are organizing on May 14 a day of worldwide prayer.

The initiative is supported by Pope Francis, and the Grand Imam of al-Azhar in Egypt, Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb.

Monsignor Yoannis Lahzi Gaid, personal secretary of Pope Francis, said in a virtual press conference on Monday: “The initiative hopes to unite men and women around the world in praying to God Almighty to relieve humanity from this pandemic. It is the first time for mankind to gather for one goal: to pray together, each according to his faith and religion, to ensure that faith in God unites us and does not divide us.”

The initiative also calls on people to pray for God to “inspire and guide scientists and researchers to discover a vaccine soon.”

The coronavirus has infected more than 4.1 million people worldwide and claimed the lives of over 285,000.
