Breaking, entering, cooking: Five men in India trespass for meal amid coronavirus

Five men broke into a restaurant in the Indian town of Junagadh to cook themselves a meal of rice and curry, while the country remains in widespread lockdown to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

In CCTV footage posted on Twitter by The Times of India Rajkot, the men can be seen cooking themselves rice and potato curry to eat, before later leaving without stealing anything, The Times reported.

Owner of Gajanand Parotha House restaurant Jitesh Tank told The Times of India newspaper he received a call on May 13 from the owner of an office near the restaurant, informing him the door was open.

“On entering the kitchen, I found that there were five used plates lying around. Some kitchen utensils were also used to prepare food. They seem to have prepared some rice and potato curry,” Tank said, according to The Times.

The police were later informed once the footage was uploaded to social media by Tank, the newspaper said.

“A couple of constables from Junagadh B division station went to the spot and took the footage from the owner,” said the deputy superintendent of police for Junagadh Pradeepsinh Jadeja, The Times reported.

India recorded its biggest surge in daily coronavirus cases on Monday, with 5,242 new infections and 157 deaths due to the virus. The country’s total infections now stands at more than 96,000, the most in Asia.

The federal government on Sunday extended the country’s nationwide lockdown until the end of May, but eased some restrictions to enable a degree of economic activity to continue, with states being able to decide how to continue the lockdown.

Authorities have blamed the surge in cases on hundreds of thousands of migrant workers returning to villages following an easing of lockdown rules on May 4.

However, most of the country’s infections remain confined to India’s major cities, with Mumbai alone accounting for almost 20 percent of total cases.
