Social media users in Jordan circulated a letter written by a mother to her son, who was killed Thursday when a school bus he was in sank during a flash flood in areas near the Dead Sea.

Twitter users sympathized with the mourning mother who was overwhelmed by the death of her son.

In a heartbreaking letter, the mother shared her last moments with her son where she “was worried about him, so I told [him] to take a jacket in case the weather changed. I did not know that tonight [he] would be sleeping amidst the cold and darkness of a mortuary fridge.”

The mother expressed that she did not cry for her son, as she was still waiting to hear a knock on the door signaling his return.

In the letter, the mother promised her son that she would not give him a hard time if he threw his bag in the hallway when he returned or if he came home with dirty shoes. She said she simply wants to look into his eyes and smell him one more time.

Heavy rains hit Jordan on Thursday afternoon, causing floods in several areas which lead to the worst disaster in years. The Dead Sea, the lowest point on the earth, is surrounded by steep valley slopes that frequently witness flash floods and landslides.

At least 20 people, mainly schoolchildren and teachers, were killed on Thursday in the flash flood that happened during a school field trip, rescuers and hospital workers said.
