Puerto Rican pop singer Ricky Martin, who performed on the final of pan-Arab broadcaster MBC’s reality singing talent show ‘The Voice’ on Saturday in Beirut, said his appearance on the show was about "breaking boundaries."

“When I was invited to do so [perform on the Middle East-based iteration of ‘The Voice’] I didn’t think about it twice,” said the 42-year-old “Livin’ la Vida Loca” singer.

“That’s the beauty of music. It’s about breaking boundaries. When I have the opportunity to bring my art, bring my culture, into a platform as powerful as ‘The Voice Arabia’ and share it with the rest of the Arab world, I found it a very beautiful opportunity.”

Similarities between Arabs and Puerto Ricans are “the passion” both cultures share, said Martin, who has visited Lebanon four times.

“Here in the Arab world, you have big hearts and I’m very lucky to sense it,” he said. “When I have the opportunity to bring my music to in this case Beirut, or the entire region, it’s nothing but a gift. I feel very lucky and blessed.”

Ricky’s Lebanese passion

When asked about whether he was considering making music with an Arab artist, Martin said it “must happen.”

After his brief stint in Beirut, Martin will go on to Australia, where he will perform on their iteration of singing talent show. Afterwards, the singer would “lock myself in the studio, and then hopefully by the end of the year I will come back to the region for concerts.”

Earlier, Martin posted on micro blogging site Twitter that he had been “dying…for some real Lebanese food.”

When asked if he had had the chance to indulge in the country’s cuisine, the singer replied that “anywhere in the world, I look for Lebanese food. I really enjoy it.”
