Australian actor Hugh Jackman is using his worldwide fame – acquired after playing iconic roles such as Wolverine and Van Helsing – to help in the fight against poverty.

In a video for Global Citizen, an advocacy organization working to end extreme poverty, the "X-Men" star urges viewers to join in fighting global poverty.

While huge progress has been made over the past 20 years, Jackman says this year “is a historic opportunity to completely end world poverty by 2013.”

The resources and the ideas to put a successful fight exist, he said, adding that the will of the supporters will drive the effort.

“I’m taking action to end extreme poverty, please join me.”

In 2012, the World Bank said Developing countries appear to have already met a United Nations Millennium Development Goal to halve extreme poverty in the world's poorest countries by 2015.
