This New Year, the world’s your oyster: Where to ring in 2017

A lot of people will be glad to see the back of 2016. From celebrity deaths to global upheaval, the emergence of 2017 is something to look forward to, so where’s best to ring in the New Year?

Sydney’s the first city to ring in the changes and those in the know hire a private boat and sail into Sydney harbor to watch the firework display from their own decks. Or you can also join a special New Year’s Eve cruise with a five course dinner and entertainment, which often tend to have a family focus.

If you’re in London for the end of the year, the Southbank Center plays hosts to seven pop up nightclubs across seven floors with a glam vintage theme (although the Studio will be leaning on the glam side with 70s and 80s music), there’s even a hair salon. At midnight, hit the roof terrace to see London’s always fabulous fireworks. Of course you can’t mention New Year without thinking Scotland. There’s the massive Hogmanay street parties in Edinburgh and Glasgow but a visit to the small town of Stornoway will reveal a more traditional side to festivities, with lots of fun Scottish dancing and a family atmosphere.

Over in New York it’s all about the famous ball drop in Times Square. The best place to see that is from the R Lounge at the Renaissance Hotel. Over in LA it’s not all clubs and cocktails, spend the last night of the year about the Queen Mary. The famous ship will host jazz bands, dueling pianos, dances and you’re in prime position for the fireworks over the Pacific Ocean come midnight.

However it’s not all about the big cities, fireworks and thousands of people counting backwards. You might want to take this time to reflect and regroup with your nearest and dearest, in which case a private island might be just the thing for a small intimate party. Cara Delevingne and her squad recently took over a Maldives island for a week and you can do the same – the Four Seasons and Coco Prive have their own sandy spots in the archipelago you can hire along with a chef, diving instructors and nannies. Fancy something a little more A-list? North Island in the Seychelles can be hired in its entirety – William and Kate did this (fellow honeymooners George and Amal Clooney didn’t).

If beating a retreat to a retreat is more your idea of heaven come the 31 December, then Asia is where it’s at. Sri Lanka has a host of yoga, surfing and meditating breaks – Ulpotha is meant to be one of the best in the world. A rice village for half the year, it becomes a luxurious yoga and meditation centre for the winter. Or the Indonesian island of Bali is always on oasis of calm come January. Pop by to kick start your New Year with peace and purpose at one of the many body and soul retreats working on the island.

But of course, there’s always closer to home to consider. Dubai excels itself every year with people stationed either near the Palm Jumeirah or the Burj Khalifa to catch the record-breaking fireworks while the rest of the world looks on.
