Dubai World Cup is not just about having the richest horse race in the world but a chance for fashion lovers to ‘strut’ their stuff. A bit of the glitz and glamour that you can find on a Hollywood red carpet was topped off at the Dubai races with eccentric and trendy hats.

“Dressing for the occasion is all part of the event itself. It’s the perfect opportunity to pull that something special out of your wardrobe and dress to impress,” the Dubai World Cup official said on its website.

While hose racers get their lucrative rewards for being the fastest on the track, the event gave the ladies the opportunity to walk down their very own cat walk. Prizes were handed out to the best dressed man and woman, including those donning the finest and most creative hats.

Making hats a central theme at the races, sees clothing boutiques also competing for the top spot.

Angela Walton, owner of Oasis Fashion, in Dubai’s Wafi mall, says her store sold 20 times more hats in March than in other months, all owing to Dubai’s World Cup.

“For the first few years of the races, people went and wore hats but it wasn’t a big thing. Now it just got bigger and bigger. Definitely March is the best month for us because of the races…it’s an excellent season for hats,” Walton told Dubai-based Gulf News.

At Dubai’s Meydan Racecourse, jockeys and their mounts were competing in nine races.

On Saturday, Animal Kingdom, ridden by Joel Rosario for Team Valor, won the $10 million Dubai World Cup by two lengths.
