WATCH: Models with disabilities take center stage at NY Fashion Week

The Runway of Dreams Foundation (RODF) held gala event and runway show with a difference at New York Fashion Week on Wednesday.

Thirty models, comprising adults and children, with disabilities took to the runway wearing adaptive clothing by design houses Tommy Hilfiger, Nike and Target.

RODF founder and fashion designer, Mindy Scheier, says the idea for the foundation came to her via her son, Oliver, who has a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy.

“He vocalized to us that he really wanted to wear what everybody else gets to wear and that truly opened my eyes to the need, of not only my son, Oliver, but the millions of people - almost 60 million people in the United States alone have a disability and a billion people globally,” said Scheier.

Scheier started the RODF in 2014 and this was the foundation’s first New York Fashion Week presentation. RODF works with the fashion industry to fully include people with disabilities, not only through adaptive clothing, but also through clothing donations.
