Vintage aircraft fly over Saudi Arabia’s al-Ula ancient desert city

The international cultural, musical, and touristic festival of Winter at Tantora, taking place in Saudi Arabia, is offering rides in a range of vintage aircraft to explore the ancient city of al-Ula.

The Beechcraft Model 18 utility aircraft, dating back to 1969 or older, will take tourists back to the early days of long-distance pioneer flying.

The flights above al-Ula are aimed for those who want to enjoy views which have remained the same as when these early aviation pioneers flew over them.

“It is breath-taking. I have been all way through the world but this is amazing and a wonderful experience,” Klaus Plasa, one of the aircraft pilots said.

The official website of the festival tells tourists to put their jackets on for the flight, due to the open cockpit.

“It is like a motorcycle in the air. You’re free to feel the wind and feel the currents,” said Rob Macdonald, another pilot of the vintage aircraft.

The Winter at Tantora festival runs each weekend from December 19, 2019, to March 7, 2020.
