Turkish Twitter user sentenced to jail for using ‘Allah’ in his handle

A Turkish Twitter user using the handle “Allah CC” has been sentenced to 11 months and 20 days in jail for insulting religious values, Cumhuriyet newspaper reported on Friday.

According to Ahvanews, the court in the eastern province of Mus overseeing the case decided to commute the prison sentence handed to the defendant, a teacher based in Eskisehir, central Turkey, to a fine of 7,000 lira ($1,327).

The Turkish man from Mus who filed the complaint against the Twitter user has vowed to appeal against the decision, saying a person who insulted religious values deserved a prison sentence.
