Twitter has temporarily restricted the account of Qais al-Khazali, leader of the Asaib Ahl al-Haq Iran-backed Iraqi militia.

A notice on the al-Khazali’s profile on the platform visible late on Thursday read: “Caution: This account is temporarily restricted” and cited “unusual activity” from the account.

Last week, the United States blacklisted three Iran-backed Iraqi paramilitary leaders over their alleged role in killings of anti-government protesters in Iraq and threatened future sanctions if violence against demonstrators continued.

The sanctions targeted al-Khazali and his brother Laith al-Khazali, another leader of the Asaib Ahl al-Haq, according to a statement from the US Treasury Department.
