The United States Army released pictures taken by a combat photographer showing an explosion that killed her and four Afghan soldiers during a live-fire training exercise in 2013.

Hilda Clayton, aged 22 at the time of her death, was a visual information specialist serving in Afghanistan when the incident occurred during a training mission certifying the Afghan soldiers on mortar operations.

Clayton, accompanied by an Afghan photographer, was capturing photos of the training when a mortar tube accidentally exploded.

The photos were recently published, with the permission of Clayton's family, in the US Army’s Military Review journal.

“Not only did Clayton help document activities aimed at shaping and strengthening the partnership, but she also shared in the risk by participating in the effort,” the journal stated.
