Teacher soothes Syrian refugees through music

A Syrian music teacher tries to sooth homesick refugees at the Za’atari camp in Jordan through the melodies of his oud.

“We are struggling on the inside. Only a person living in the diaspora would understand and feel this struggle,” Abu Mohammad told Al Arabiya News during a video interview inside his tent in the camp.

“As a result of this struggle, we decided to express ourselves through the oud,” he added.

The teacher believes that his music has contributed to the “Syrian revolution.”

“A revolution is in the scalpel of a doctor, the shovel of a farmer, the pen of a poet, and the brush of a painter,” he said.

The Za’atari camp houses hundreds of thousands of displaced Syrians who fled their war-torn country.
