Syrian refugee culinary fair tempts foodies in Beirut

The scent of traditional dishes prepared by Syrian refugee women wafted through the air at a food fair held in the Lebanese capital Beirut last week.

Syrian women participating in the event at the Caritas Lebanon Immigrants Centre did not hide their delight at the queue of customers waiting to taste the customary Damascene dishes.

The event, called "Once upon a time ... olden time delicacies of Syria," was a joint U.N., Caritas Lebanon and Souk el-Tayeb initiative to provide Syrian refugees the opportunity to improve their standard of living.

Samira, one of the participating Syrian women, sold her handmade dishes at the fair.

“There’s nothing to be embarrassed of, I have no source of income and working any job is not shameful. If I didn’t work I wouldn’t be able to feed my daughters.”

The project at Caritas, which is the Latin word for charity, aimed to economically empower female refugees.
