Palestinian football body quashes Maradona ‘rumor’
The Palestinian Football Association has quashed speculation of Argentinian football legend Diego Maradona coaching the country’s national team during the 2015 AFC Asian Cup in Australia.

“It’s just a rumor,” Susan Shalabi, the director of the association’s international department, was quoted as telling DPA (Deutsche Presse-Agentur) news agency on Wednesday.

Shalabi said that the president of the association “has said there will be a Palestinian coach this time.”

Palestinian media on Wednesday reported that Maradona was in advanced stages of negotiations to take over the Palestinian national team.

Maradona coached Al Wasl of the United Arab Emirates in 2010. He also managed the Argentinian national team between 2008 and 2010.

Regarded by many as the best football player of all time, the 53-year-old Maradona led Argentina to a World Cup title in 1986 and was named the tournament’s best player. He also had a stellar career playing for Italian club Napoli.

Maradona has voiced support for the Palestinian cause in the past and recently took part in a charity match in Rome to promote peace and inter-religious cooperation.
