Facebook is investigating whether a small hairdressing salon in Dubai has breached its intellectual property rights by giving itself a very similar name, Facelook, The National reported Monday.

“We are careful to protect the Facebook brand and we will be looking more closely at this particular case,” a Facebook spokesman for the Middle East and North Africa told the Abu Dhabi-based newspaper.

“We’ve registered this name and even the brand under UAE [United Arab Emirates] labor law. We haven’t had any issues,” said the salon owner, whose banner’s color scheme and font are similar to that of the social networking website.

The Facelook owner, who declined to give his name to The National, said the similarity is coincidental. “For a normal guy, with a naked eye, it looks familiar. However, the color and the font is different to Facebook.”

On the salon’s logo, the company name starts with a small letter, as with Facebook.

The UAE has subsequently urged companies to ensure that they are not breaching copyright laws by giving themselves names similar to global brands.
