Poisonous passion: Palestinian man raises rare snakes

When you are visiting the village of Beitonia west of the West Bank city of Ramallah, do not be surprised if you hear the sound of snakes hissing.

Jamal al-Amwassi, a 30-year-old Palestinian, uses his house to raise rare snakes and reptiles in order to use their venom for laboratory experiments.

His passion for poison has resulted in him becoming an expert and trusted reference – speaking at schools and universities as well as training civil defense personnel on how to handle snakes.

As some of Amwassi’s snakes have different habitats to those commonly found in the Middle East, the snake expert has had to use his garden to create a suitable environment for reproduction, as well as raising other animals to use as a food source.
