The suicide of Robin Williams has shone a light on Hollywood celebrities who have been diagnosed with depression.

Williams, an Oscar-winning actor and comedian, suffered from severe depression, the Daily News reported.

Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones has talked openly about her struggle against bipolar disorder.

Zeta-Jones went to rehab to for treatment, the Daily Mail reported . “Not sleeping, worry, stress” are among the symptoms she recalled suffering.

Jon Hamm, who stars in the series “Mad Men,” had chronic depression after his father’s death. Antidepressants, therapies and work helped him overcome the illness.

“You can change your brain chemistry enough to think: ‘I want to get up in the morning; I don’t want to sleep until four in the afternoon’,” Hamm told The Observer in 2010, referring to medication.

“Friends” star Matthew Perry also suffered from depression, along with alcohol addiction.

Pop star Demi Lovato made headlines in 2010 by checking into a treatment facility for “emotional and physical issues.”

After leaving the centre, Lovato revealed to People that she suffered from anorexia, bulimia and bipolar disorder.

“Looking back it makes sense,” she said.

“There were times when I was so manic, I was writing seven songs in one night and I’d be up until 5:30 in the morning,” the young star explained.
