The United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) has been mocked by social media users after it confused Westminster Cathedral with a mosque.

UKIP made the misstep while replying to a BBC tweet asking for the opinion of online users on  party leader Nigel Farage.

The party wrote: “Perfect place to hold vote in front of a mosque in London. The BBC’s random means selective.”

The mistake led online users to create a #thingsthatarenotamosque hashtag.
