Authorities in Egypt arrested a 16-year-old boy who managed to hack into a number of Egyptian bank accounts over the past year, the Arabic language website of Al Arabiya News Channel reported on Saturday.

The boy, a resident of the governorate of Kafr el-Sheikh, located around 130 kilometers north of the capital Cairo, obtained the details of credit cards and bank accounts in Egypt and abroad, which he used to buy electronic devices online - mainly mobile phones.

But his illicit spending spree was foiled when a bank employee alerted authorities after clients complained of transactions they did not authorize, prompting his arrest.

The boy was nabbed while he met with a middleman who would have delivered the goods he had purchased with the information he hacked out of bank systems, according to the report.

He reportedly confessed to illegally obtaining the information upon confrontation, authorities said.
