Pop singer and U.N. goodwill ambassador Shakira has said there is “a lot of racism” behind the current refugee crisis, British daily The Independent reported Wednesday.

Describing it as “one of the great humanitarian crises of our time,” she said nations should “rise above flags, borders, numbers, selfishness and racism.”

She added: “I’m sure it’s not an easy problem to resolve, but I’m also sure that nations coming together could find an intelligent solution to this.”
