Video of thrill-seeking teen lying between rail tracks receives backlash in Egypt

Social media users in Egypt have been sharing a video of a 14-year-old boy from the northern province of Dakahlia lying between railway tracks in his hometown before a train passed fast.

The young man was reportedly challenged by his friends to lie between the railways waiting for the train to pass. He lied down for a few minutes before the train passed as his terrified friends watched in disbelief that he survived the stunt.

The young man quickly stood up receiving praise from his peers, who described him as crazy in the video, and hailed in the joy of his survival. One of them posted the video, which quickly went viral on social media.

Twitter users denounced the teen’s behavior and demanded the security services to take action against him.

Lawyers told Al Arabiya that the charge should be directed to his family for the gross negligence that almost killed their son. Egypt’s Law No. 12 of 1996 on minors, amended by Law No. 126 of the year 2008, does not include any penalties imposed on "neglectful families." Article 8 specifies that anyone who commits a violation against a child is to be jailed for a period of six months to three years. In the case of the child's death due to negligence, a management report is issued and reserved in respect to the feelings of the parents who lose their child.

Lawyers stressed that there was no explicit provision in the law that criminalized a family for “neglecting their children”.
