A video showing a group of Egyptian female students performing a dance at the heart of their university campus in Egypt has gone viral this week.

The footage showed a group of hijab-wearing students in sports attire perform Zumba-like dance steps at the Cairo University campus on the first day of classes.

Thoroughly unfazed by the crowd, the female students danced in harmony and with confidence. A few male students can also be seen performing in the background.

Local reports said the performance was a welcome gesture to new students and the minister of higher education, who was visiting the campus as classes resumed after the summer break.

The footage garnered mixed reactions on social media. Some praised the well-choreographed dance by the female students while others expressed their shock saying it was a “shame” to see female students dancing at the university campus.
