VARIETY

India’s acid attack survivor girl who is getting engaged this Valentine’s Day

As the commodification of Valentine’s Day gets played out all over again, here’s a story of human bonding that will melt your heart – the story of Rani (Hindi word for queen).

Rani was 16 when she survived an acid attack in the east India’s state of Odisha. Her face was disfigured and she lost her sight completely.

In 2014, she met Saroj, a medical representative who then quit his job to take care of Rani.

Life restored

In October 2017, doctors restored 20 percent of Rani’s eyesight, which is when she saw Saroj for the first time. Saroj had of course gotten used to Rani’s disfigured face.

The two are getting engaged today, on 14th February, which the world celebrates as Valentine’s Day.

No amount of roses and chocolates can epitomize the love this man has shown to someone disfigured and discarded by society.
