The Houthis’ Dar al-Ifta said in a statement on Tuesday that the first day of the holy month of Ramadan will be Thursday but asked people to fast anyway on Wednesday “just in case.”

“Many scholars confirm that Wednesday is (in fact) the first day of Ramadan and that the crescent would have been sighted if it hadn’t been for the clouds,” the statement said, and advised people “to fast on Wednesday just in case.”

According to some observers, the moonsighting committee in Hodeidah, west of Yemen, confused the Houthis when it said it will not be possible to sight the crescent so the Houthis issued this rather “strange” statement asking people to fast anyway on Wednesday.
