Syrian conflict discussed by key official on Al Arabiya’s ‘Diplomatic Avenue’
Monday, 28 September 2015
Al Arabiya’s interview program “Diplomatic Avenue” hosts the key leader of the moderate Syrian opposition.
During the exclusive interview, Khaled Khoja, President of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, said that Moscow’s intervention in Syria was not aimed at combatting the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) but to strengthen the Assad regime.
Khoja described Russia’s latest intervention in Syria as an invasion, saying that Syrians had the right to oppose it. In recent weeks, Russia has deployed troops and warplanes to Syria and delivered new arms to Assad's forces. Speaking about Assad, Khoja said that any political solution including Bashar al-Assad would not be considered. The official also condemned the U.N. Security Council for its inaction during the five year conflict in Syria. He added that the U.N. mediator in the Syrian conflict, Staffan de Mistura, is working on ensuring a real political transition in Syria.
In the second part of the episode, Al Arabiya’s Talal al-Haj met with the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, António Guterres who discussed the refugee crisis. Guterres said that the crisis can be handled in a better way. He added that the crisis is a heavy load for several Arab countries, including Jordan and Lebanon.
Diplomatic Avenue is beamed live every month from Al Arabiya’s studios in the United Nations. Presented by Talal al-Haj, the show features interviews with high-level diplomats and decision makers, with video reports focusing on recent diplomatic developments and pressing issues. The program casts a critical eye over the work of the U.N. and its agencies, not only on the political front, but also on the humanitarian, cultural and scientific levels. The show gives its audience an insight into what goes on within the halls and corridors of the U.N., with a special emphasis on issues that matter to the Arab and Islamic worlds.
