Diplomatic Avenue: UK official worried by ‘Russian-Iranian escalation’ in Syria
Friday, 30 October 2015
In this episode of Diplomatic Avenue, the British Ambassador to the United Nations Matthew Rycroft discusses the Syrian war, including the recent Russian intervention.
“We are very worried. We see this Russian-Iranian escalation as a significant deterioration of the situation in Syria,” Rycroft told Al Arabiya News Channel’s New York bureau chief Talal al-Haj.
“It is only going to force yet more syrians to flee and to become refugees and migrants,” he said.
During the interview, Rycroft also spoke about the Yemeni crisis and other conflicts in the Arab region.
“The poor people of Yemen are suffering horrendously at the moment, the humanitarian situation is dire and it is getting worse and the U.N. is warning that there is a risk of famine in large parts of the country.”
In the second part of the episode, al-Haj discussed women’s rights with a panel made of four female activists from around the Arab world.
Diplomatic Avenue is beamed live every month from Al Arabiya’s studios in the United Nations. Presented by Talal al-Haj, the show features interviews with high-level diplomats and decision makers, with video reports focusing on recent diplomatic developments and pressing issues. The program casts a critical eye over the work of the U.N. and its agencies, not only on the political front, but also on the humanitarian, cultural and scientific levels. The show gives its audience an insight into what goes on within the halls and corridors of the U.N., with a special emphasis on issues that matter to the Arab and Islamic worlds.
How are we doing?
