How Amnesty International reports on rights violations

“Point of Order” hosts this week Salil Shetty, the Secretary General of Amnesty International. He said that his organization relies in its human rights reports on the information collected by its researchers on the field.

As for the countries that the organization does not have access to, it relies on partners in the field. He highlighted that Amnesty International does not use the term “terrorist” but rather “extremist”.

He asserted that the organization deal with the “prisoners of conscience” but he clarified that this category does not include persons who incites or uses violence. He said that talking about universal human rights does not necessarily mean that these rights are homogeneous and uniform, adding that cultural privacy may not be used as a pretext to commit violations in the field of human rights.
