Ex-ICC prosecutor: deadline should be set to stop Syria violence

Parties guilty of war crimes in Syria should be a given a six month deadline to stop the killings, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, the International Criminal Court’s former chief prosecutor said, speaking on the “Diplomatic Avenue” program with Al Arabiya’s New York Bureau Chief Talal al-Haj.

Such a plan would be communicated to both sides in the current Syria peace talks in Geneva through Lakhdar Brahimi, the U.N.-Arab League envoy to the war-torn country.

“To stop the crimes would be non-negotiable. Brahimi cannot succeed if the crimes [in Syria] are not stopped,” said Moreno-Ocampo.

Those not adhering to the six-month deadline would be referred to the International Criminal Court for trial, he added.
