U.N. deputy chief: South Sudan peace mediators must be supported

IGAD, the regional African bloc mediating to end the conflict in South Sudan must be given the maximum amount of support, Jan Eliasson, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations speaking on the “Diplomatic Avenue” program with Al Arabiya’s New York Bureau Chief Talal al-Haj.

“It is an unstable situation, and it is now very important that the IGAD mediation team will succeed in bringing about a political discussion so that we finally can bring peace to South Sudan,” said Eliasson, speaking from the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa where the African Union Summit is currently convening.

The U.N. deputy chief called on all sides in South Sudan’s conflict to show “statesmanship” and cooperation.
