Khamenei: To end Syria war, first initiator must be determined
The Syrian conflict has devolved from peaceful protests against the regime in 2011 to a violent civil war
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has asserted that the initial aggressor in Syria conflict needs to be identified as a pre-condition to ending the civil war.
Khamenei made the remarks during a meeting with Finland President Sauli Niinisto.
The Syrian conflict has devolved from peaceful protests against the regime in 2011 to a violent civil war, as an outcome of the brutal crackdown military campaign from forces loyal to Bashar al-Assad.
Khamenei affirmed what he called his country’s “rational” stance in supporting the “people and government” in Syria.
He added: “US and certain other governments are adamant to change the Syrian government, however to end the war, initial aggressor should be identified.”
Iran’s foreign Ministry announced a meeting to be held on Friday to discuss latest development in Syria.
Spokesman Bahram Qasemi said Iranian Foreign Minister Jawad Zarif will meet his Syrian and Russian counterparts in Moscow as well.
