Video from 1977 shows Dubai ruler handling of hijacked Lufthansa plane

A video of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, dealing with the hijackers of a Lufthansa plane in 1977 has reemerged on social media.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, who was minister of defense at the time, can be seen negotiating with the hijackers from the air traffic control tower at Dubai’s old airport.

Lufthansa Flight 181 was a Boeing 737–230 aircraft named Landshut that was hijacked on October 13, 1977 by four members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine group, and later diverted to several destinations, including Dubai.

“We weren’t very surprised because they tried to take off. We got the idea since they ran out of fuel this morning and threatened to kill people,” he told reporters at the time.

The young minister of defense at the time was able to successfully end the incident without any losses.

The video, unseen until now, was released by the Hamdan Bin Mohammad Heritage Center as part of an initiative to share part of the UAE’s national documents with the public.
