UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres told Al Arabiya on Friday that he was deeply concerned about developments in Syria, saying the region was currently in a cold war and there were no channels for calm.
Guterres’ interview with Al Arabiya came just hours before the United States, Britain and France launched targeted air strikes on Syria after the suspected chemical weapons attack in Douma weeks earlier left 40 people killed.
Guterres also said it was unfortunate that there was no agreement on a mechanism for accountability for the use of chemical weapons.
“There are no military solutions to the crisis in Syria,” Guterres said.
The Secretary General said that France had submitted a proposal to restrict the veto in resolutions on crimes against humanity.
