Meet the mayor of one Mecca neighborhood who serves both locals and pilgrims

Published: Updated:

Mayor Hussein al-Hudhali has become a familiar face among locals and pilgrims who visit the Grand Mosque in Mecca because of the close proximity of his neighborhood – Al Shubaikah.

Hudhali told Al Arabiya that his job makes him different, and perhaps even unique, compared to other mayors as his municipality welcomes millions of pilgrims each year.

“There are habits that were passed to us over time, such as organizing Ramadan tables, charities and zakats by the neighborhood’s people, all these were passed through the mayor,” he said.

“These functions distinguish the mayor of the Haram area from others,” he added.
