Keep your eyes peeled and your ears wide open as it looks like an artist from the Middle East could be flying the flag at the MTV European Music Awards in Amsterdam next month.
Emirati soul singer-songwriter Hamdan al-Abri and UAE band “Juliana Down” have been nominated for “Best Middle East Act” at this year's awards ceremony along with Moroccan singer Ahmad Soultan, American-Egyptian songstress Lara Scandar and Saudi Arabia’s Rakan, reported Gulf News.
Al-Abri, who recently released his solo EP, will perform on Nov. 1 with a band named “Bull Funk Zoo” at the Yasalam Beats on the Beach next to Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Juliana Down, which has two Lebanese members: lead singer Dia Hassan and guitarist Sari Ramadan, is one of the UAE’s most well-known bands. The band has famously opened for a number of international artists including Muse, Guns N’ Roses, and Maroon 5.
One artist from the five will be selected, with the winner announced on Nov.1. The act will then travel to Amsterdam to battle for the “Worldwide Act Award.”
MTV said performers will be announced at a later date. Last year’s performers list included Taylor Swift, fun., No Doubt and Muse.
