‘Hunger Games’ theme park planned for Dubai
The Hollywood-themed park is expected to have attractions and a retail facility inspired by the movie
A theme park based on the hit movie series Hunger Games is due to open its doors in Dubai next year, according to a press release issued by entertainment firm Lionsgate.
The Hollywood-themed park, called Motiongate Dubai, is expected to have attractions and a retail facility inspired by the movie. The project’s backers expect the four million square foot park - which promises to feature 27 rides and attractions - to get over three million visits a year.
A Legoland will also be built alongside the park, with attractions based on the popular block-based kid’s toys, in addition to a Bollywood-themed park. These will be connected by Riverland, a “retail, dining and entertainment walkway,” according to the press release.
With an expected completion date of 2016, the park will also feature a live stage show based on the dance drama Step Up movie franchise.
The park’s operator is Dubai Parks and Resorts, which announced in January that it had started construction for the Dreamworks zone, a themepark based around the movies of the popular animation firm, famous for hits such as “Shrek” and “Madagascar.”
The development will also include a Polynesian-themed family resort.
Dubai Parks and Resorts Chief Executive Officer Raed al-Nuaimi said that with the new venture, “Dubai will set a global benchmark as the ultimate movie themed destination.”
The Hunger Games movies, based on the bestselling books by Suzanne Collins, have so far grossed $1.6 billion worldwide.
The books, on which the films are based, have sold more than 80 million copies around the world.
The final film in the franchise is scheduled for release at the end of this year.
