Newly elected Miss Belgium faces racist abuse on social media

Published: Updated:

Angeline Flor Pua faced racist comments on social media as soon as she was elected Miss Belgium last Saturday.

The 22-year-old, born in Antwerp and daughter to Filipino parents said that “it hurts to read all those things about myself”.

A few hours after her win, hundreds of racist and negative comments were flooding the social media with some calling her “the new Miss Philippines” while others asked that “hopefully it’s not a Miss lady boy”.

Flor Pua reacted by saying in an interview with BBC News: “I know those things are not true. I can show my ID, my birth certificate to prove that I am a Belgian.”

She insisted on the fact that so far she has never faced racism. “I am very shocked about the news happening these few days because I have never been confronted with racism. I have always been accepted by the people at work, at school, everywhere,” she told the BBC.
