The French judiciary on Tuesday ordered the release of Moroccan star Saad Lamjarred on probation after he paid his bail.
“My son is free. Thank God,” Lamjarred’s father wrote on his Facebook page.
The French prosecutor in Draguignan in South France had charged Lamjarred with rape and accordingly requested he remains in custody temporarily but the investigative judge ordered his release.
According to media reports, Lamjarred was arrested in Saint-Tropez, a coastal town in the French Riviera where he was vacationing after returning back from his home country.
The authorities extended his detention for 24 hours on Monday until they investigate further and hear more witnesses especially due to the two parties’ conflicting statements.
The investigative judge ordered his release on Tuesday night after hearing his statement. Lamjarred however will be under judicial supervision, hence he cannot travel outside France, must hand over his passport to the authorities and is not allowed to contact the plaintiff or the witnesses.
The general prosecution can appeal the judge’s order and arrest Lamjarred again.
Lamjarred has been in France for more than a year and a half where he is being tried on rape charges in an ongoing case. He spent time in a Paris jail but was released under parole and allowed to visit Morocco on a few occasions.
